I am also an RN.  Noone is ready for the role change.  It is always a pull but it does get easier.  Because you share so many moments is becomes more relaxed.  I lived in CT 25 years, my parents here in NY.  So no we were not that close.  Now I care for them every week.  No they do not live with me yet.  My mother is quickly loosing her mind, memory and ability to care for herself.  She now lives with my 85 year old father.  Every week is a new challenge, and now a new problem.   Prayers to you and yours, lead with your heart, forgive often, and take care of yourself, ask for help.
