    Hi Steve,

My parents went through something very similar. My mom was not eating and not remembering to take her medication and my dad was very forgetful. We had their doctor step in and talk with all of us about their options. Sometimes hearing what they need to hear from a third party can be more insightful to them. Anyway, this is what worked for me. Hope that helps!

My parents were actually grateful when I was direct with them about their memories being not so great.  I’d say this: talk with them in a patient and loving way and explain to them that this is to their benefit and tell them why.  If they get into a car accident or fall in their house, by having you assigned as their power of attorney, you can access their money to get them care.  Have a trusted 3rd party step in if necessary to help them see the reasoning behind this action.

I’m glad you asked that question because my folks had so much stuff after being in their house for 57 years.  I was really afraid they’d be heart-broken to live apart from it.  Boy was I surprised at how much of a relief it was for them to not have to care for all their belongings.  When I needed to dispose of the stuff, I did all of these:

    • Checked with my parents to see that I was clear what they wanted to “leave behind” and how they felt about that.
    • Asked my family if they had any interest in taking some of the items
    • Put a few items in storage
    • Held a Garage Sale   (some of my friends with more valuable items held an estate sale through a professional company)
    • Donated the remaining items to Charity and got my parents a tax deduction.
